Young Boy at Church

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names with small American flags mounted on either side of it.

The seven year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the
pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning Alex."

"Good morning Pastor, what is this?" he asked the pastor.

The pastor said, "Well, son, it's a memorial plaque to all the young men and women who died in the Service."

Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.

Finally, little Alex's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear, he asked, "Which service, the 8:45 or the 10:30?"

Every Woman Should Know

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

enough money within her control
to move out and rent a place of her own,
even if she never wants to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

something perfect to wear if the employer,
or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .

a youth she's content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ..

a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to
retelling it in her old age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .....

a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ..

one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....

A good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...

eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal,
that will make her guests feel honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE

a feeling of control over her destiny...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to fall in love without losing herself..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

how to quit a job, break up with a lover,
and confront a friend without ruining the friendship...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

That she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips, or the nature
of her parents..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

That her childhood may not have been perfect...but it's over...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

what she would and wouldn't do for love or more...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

How to live alone... even if she doesn't like it...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW..

Whom she can trust, whom she can't and why she shouldn't take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

Where to go... be it to her best friend's kitchen table... Or a charming inn in the woods..
when her soul needs soothing...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...

what she can and can't accomplish in a day...a month...and a year...

Little Zachary

Little Zachary was doing very badly in math. His parents had tried everything... Tutors, mentors, flash cards, Special learning centers. In short, everything they could think of to help his math.

Finally, in a last ditch effort, they took Zachary down and enrolled him in the local Catholic school. After the first day, little Zachary came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn't even kiss his mother Hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. Books and papers were spread out all over the room and little Zachary was hard at work. His mother was amazed. She called him down to dinner.

To her shock, the minute he was done, he marched back to his room without a word, and in no time, he was back hitting the books as hard as before. This went on for some time, day after day, while the mother tried to unders tand wh at made all the difference.

Finally, little Zachary brought home his report card. He quietly laid it on the table, went up to his room and hit the books. With great trepidation, his Mom looked at it and to her great surprise, little Zachary got an "A" in math. She could no
longer hold her curiosity. She went to his room and said, "Son, what was it? Was it the nuns?"

Little Zachary looked at her and shook his head, no. "Well, then," she replied, Was it the books, the discipline, the structure, the uniforms? "WHAT WAS IT ALREADY?"

Little Zachary looked at her and said, "Well, on the first day of school when I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew they weren't fooling around"

Stayed in bed for most of the day

I went to a scrapbook day yesterday and today I'm paying the price. My head is all stuffed up, I'm coughing all the time and generally feel like crap!

Didn't go to church today. Not like anyone really missed me there! :)

16 weeks

How your baby's growing:
At 4 1/2 inches long (head to bottom) and 3 1/2 ounces, your baby is about the size of an avocado. In the next three weeks, she'll go through a tremendous growth spurt, though, doubling her weight and adding inches to her length. Her lower limbs are much more developed now. Her head is more erect than it has been, and her eyes have moved toward the front of her head. Your baby's ears are close to their final position, too. Some of her more advanced body systems are working, including her circulatory system and urinary tract. Her heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood each day, circulating her total blood volume through her body many times. (By the end of your pregnancy, this will increase to about 190 quarts.) The patterning of her scalp has begun, though her hair isn't recognizable yet. Although closed, her eyes are moving (slowly), and she's even started growing toenails.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:
Have people been telling you how wonderful you look? The "glow of pregnancy" is real, thanks to increased blood flow to the skin. You may be enjoying yourself more, too, now that your hormones have stabilized and nausea has eased up. You're also probably less anxious about something happening to your baby (the risk of miscarriage drops dramatically after the 14th week) which likely adds to your overall sense of well-being.

Soon you'll experience one of the most wonderful moments of pregnancy — feeling your baby move. While some women notice "quickening" as early as 16 weeks, most don't until about 18 weeks or more. If this is your first baby, don't be too anxious — you may not be aware of your baby's movements until 20 weeks or so. The earliest movements may feel like little flutters, gas bubbles, or even like popcorn popping. Over the following weeks they'll start to feel unmistakably like kicks.

This is no fun!!

Being sick that is.

I was home sick today with a lovely cold/flu mess. Started feeling crummy late yesterday afternoon. Came home and was FREEZING cold...ending up going to bed about 7:00 with a fever of 101. Slept on and off for most of the night, but woke up this morning looking for the bus that hit me.

Slept most of the day...hopefully I'm doing better to head back to work tomorrow.

You Should Live in the Suburbs

Like many people, you like the city - but you don't want to live in it.

For you, the suburbs is the perfect compromise.

You can enjoy the city as much as you want, but you have a quiet, safe neighborhood to come home to.

Update....

Mom is recovering nicely...little impatient, as she feels better, but still can't do much.

FIL goes in on Tuesday to remove the skin cancer from his shoulder. After that, it's just following up every so often and he's good to go.

Thanks for the prayers!

15 weeks

How your baby's growing:
Your growing baby now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces (about the size of an apple). She's busy moving amniotic fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract, which helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop. Her legs are growing longer than her arms now, and she can move all of her joints and limbs. Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. If you shine a flashlight at your tummy, for instance, she's likely to move away from the beam. There's not much for your baby to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. Finally, if you have an ultrasound this week, you may be able to find out whether your baby's a boy or a girl! (Don't be too disappointed if it remains a mystery, though. Nailing down your baby's sex depends on the clarity of the picture and on your baby's position. He or she may be modestly curled up or turned in such a way as to "hide the goods.")

See what your baby looks like this week.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:
You've probably gained about 5 pounds by now (a little more or less is fine, too) and are well into the swing of your pregnancy, but you may still be surprised by an unexpected symptom now and then. If your nose is stuffed up, for instance, you can probably chalk it up to the combined effect of hormonal changes and increased blood flow to your mucous membranes. This condition is so common, there's even a name for it: "rhinitis of pregnancy." Some pregnant women also suffer nosebleeds as a result of increased blood volume and blood vessel expansion in the nose.

If you're having amniocentesis, it'll most likely happen between now and 18 weeks. This test can identify hundreds of genetic and chromosomal disorders. If you're getting very anxious while waiting for the results, it may help to know that most women who undergo amniocentesis get good news about their babies — bringing welcome relief from their worries.

Don't be surprised if you and your partner are feeling a little stressed out these days. Many pregnant couples worry about their baby's health and how they'll handle the changes ahead. But with physical discomforts on the wane and energy on the rise, this is also a wonderful trimester for most women.

I feel the earth move...

under my feet!  LOL

There was an earthquake this morning in downstate Illinois.  It registered about 5.2 on the richter (sp?) scale and it could be felt for up to 450 miles away.  We didn't feel anything.

Did any of you?

Mom's surgery

went well and she was home by 2:00 this afternoon. When I talked to her later in the evening, she had managed to get upstairs (by crawling...lol). She had been walking on it a little bit, using her walker.

I'm going to visit her tomorrow night for a little bit.

14 week doctor appointment

Had an appointment this morning...still not 100% sure why they wanted to see me, but that's ok. I thought that I was going in for the AFP screening as the doctor and I talked about. Turns out, they don't do that until 16 weeks. Anyways, I got to hear the heartbeat for the first time!!! :) That made the appointment that much better! I had seen it on the ultrasound at 8 & 12 weeks, but this was the first time to hear it. Going strong at 163.

I go back in 2 weeks for the blood test and they'll check my thyroid levels again, just to make sure everything is good.

Prayer requests

Ok, there are a few of them..

1)My mom - She is going on Wednesday for surgery on her right foot. She has a hammertoe (her second toe crosses over her big toe) plus a bunion on that foot, so she is getting that all fixed. Since she's in a job where she's on her feet all day (teacher)... she will be off of work until May 19th. Then she'll teach for another 2 weeks before summer vacation.

2)My FIL - Found out last week that he has skin cancer. It seems as if it was caught early, but we are waiting for the biopsy results to find out the severity and the course of treatment. I haven't told my folks yet, I didn't want them to worry before mom's surgery.

3)For my friend Becky - She is actually a friend of a friend but we got to know each other pretty well through Jill. I got an email from Becky yesterday asking for sponsor's for her as she's walking in the Walk for Diabetes in memory of her husband. He passed away a few weeks ago after complications from diabetes...and he was only 28 years old. They weren't even married for 5 years. It just breaks my heart that such a young life was cut short. I ask that you keep her and her family in your prayers as she tries to move on from this tragedy.

Ditched church today...

Wasn't feeling all that great and honestly, didn't feel like going. I'm Sunday School coordinator yet, there are no kids, so why bother?? If people don't like it, tough!

Went to Babies R Us

To look around and get some ideas about patterns and things I would need.

I'm really digging this bedding set...especially since we don't know if it's boy or girl.

I like this for the car seat and stroller...

Some of these are actually true...

This is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Chicago .

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from September through
May, you live in Chicago

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you live in Chicago

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in
Chicago .

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you live in Chicago

If 'Vacation' means going anywhere south of I-80 for the weekend, you live in Chicago .

If you measure distance in hours, you live in Chicago .

If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' in the same day and back
again, you live in Chicago .

If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging
blizzard without flinching, you live in Chicago .

If you carry jumpers in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you live in Chicago

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you live in Chicago

If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph -- you're going 80 and
everybody is p assing you, you live in Chicago

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled
with snow, you live in Chicago .

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and
road construction, you live in Chicago .

If you have more miles on your snow blower than your car, you live in Chicago

If you find 10 degrees 'a little chilly', you live in Chicago .

If you actually understand these jokes, and forward them to all your
Chicago friends & others, you live or have lived in Chicago .

Why, Why, Why

Why, Why, Why ?
do we press harder on a remote control when we know the
batteries are getting dead?

Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they
know there is not enough money?

Why does someone believe you when you say there are four
billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle?

Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection?

Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when
you throw a revolver at him?

Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Whose idea was it to put an 'S' in the word ! 'lisp'?

If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the
bubbles are always white?

Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?

Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes
that something new to eat will have materialized?

Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with
their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it
down to give the vacuum one more chance?

Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your
firsttry?

How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures?

When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a
shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, 'It's all
right?' Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, 'That hurt, you stupid idiot?'

Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's
falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?

In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in
summer when we complained about the heat?

How come you never hear father-in-law jokes?

Early night tonight

I've had a headache for most of the day. It felt like a tension, migraine, sinus headache all rolled into one. Since I am pg, I didn't want to take any medication until I called the doctor. Yes, I know, I'm paranoid. They did tell me that I could take Extra strength Tylenol. So, I did that before I left work. Just had some dinner and now I'm off to sleep!

13 weeks!

How your baby's growing:
Fingerprints have formed on your baby's tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you're having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.

How your life's changing:
This is the last week of your first trimester, and your risk of miscarriage is now much lower than earlier in pregnancy. Next week marks the beginning of your second trimester, a time of relative comfort for many women who see early pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness and fatigue subside. More good news: Many couples also notice a distinct libido lift around this time. Birth is still months away, but your breasts may have already started making colostrum, the nutrient-rich fluid that feeds your baby for the first few days after birth, before your milk starts to flow.

(This came from a bulletin off of MySpace...just wanted to share here)

A lot has been said about the United Church of Christ lately, especially Trinity UCC in Chicago. Much of it has been narrow and distorted. We prepared this video to tell the broader story of who we really are.

Baby Update

Yesterday was my doctor's appointment. I got to see baby on the screen, moving around. Still hard to believe that lil bugger is inside of me! :-)

Doctor also tested my thyroid levels and didn't seem overly concerned that I haven't gotten an appointment with the endocrinologist yet. I will defintely work on it for next time.

Next appt is April 14th!
